I worked for Breakthough UK for about 8 years or so and they are a Disabled Person’s organisation where the Social Model of Disability and 7 Needs of Independent Living were central to the work we were doing. The Social Model of Disability argues that people are not so much disabled by their impairments but by society not taking proper account of their impairments. So, for instance someone who uses a wheelchair might not be able to get into a building because it is not accessible to them. It is not their impairment that is the problem it’s the problem that the owners of the building have not made it accessible.
This session will be looking at Social Model of Disability and how the model can be used to help empower people with Long COVID, ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia in particular overcome some of the barriers that they face. Kiera talked briefly about The Social Model of Disability in her session on Employment and there was enough interest to know more about it that we thought it would make a great session in and of itself. I will also cover the 7 Needs of Independent Living in the session.
Log in details will be added nearer the time although will be the same as our usual ones.
